Abstract

The adsorption of methylene blue dye (MBD) from aqueous solutions was inspected using a novel composite beads fabricated from polymeric polyethersulfone (PES) that was immobilized with Zeolite and assessment as an adsorbent. The impact of process variables was optimized by using response surface methodology (RSM), such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial MBD concentration, pH and agitation speed on dye removal using both free Zeolite and PES/Zeolite composite beads. The results showed that optimum contact time for MBD dye decolorization was 100 min using free Zeolite compared with 140 minutes using PES/Zeolite composite beads. The optimum adsorbent dosage was 1 g/L for both free and beads Zeolite for decolorization initial MBD concentration of 5ppm. It was elucidated that the increment in both the solution pH and agitation speed have positive impact for MBD dye decolorization using either free or Zeolite composite beads. characterization of prepared Zeolite from natural Egyptian clay and its polymeric hybrid was carried out using physico-chemical analysis such as FTIR, XRD, EDX, SEM and surface area to determine the properties of each adsorbent material. The immobilization of prepared Zeolite onto the polymeric PES was confirmed from both XRD and FTIR results. The results suggest that the adsorption of MBD on zeolite/PES composite obeys Freundlish model and may be best characterized by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with high correlation coefficients. It was evident that both the prepared Zeolite and its composite beads are promising and economical adsorbent materials for MBD dye decolorization from industrial wastewater
