Abstract The present study is concerned with the visual semiotic analysis of the Syrian conflict. It attempts an analysis of 168 photos collected from the Syrian media represented by Al Marsad Al Surey and SANA, the Russian media represented by RT and the American media represented by NY Times. The study adopts the semiotic analysis based on the Kress and van Leeuwen‟s (2006) framework. The aim of the study is to trace down the differences represented by each media through representational meaning. In addition, it investigates the meanings of different frames through compositional meaning and the ideologies established by each media through interactional meaning. Results of the study indicate that representational meaning reveals that both NY Times and Al Marsad Al Surey represent Syrians as being victimized under the effect of the war. On the other hand, SANA represents heroism and nationalism whereas RT represents destruction. Compositional meaning reveals that the frame of national figures refers to humiliation in NY Times and appreciation in SANA. Similarly, the frame of victims in both NY Times and Al Marsad Al Surey refers to diaspora or to war vandalism whereas it refers to communicative gap in RT. Finally, the interactional meaning reveals the ideology established by each media through two different frames: the pro-war frame versus the anti-war frame. The former is represented by SANA and RT whereas the latter is represented by NY Times and Al Marsad Al Surey. Both NY Times and Al Marsad Al Surey victimize the Syrian citizens by glorifying their sufferance. |
