Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an epithelial cancer of the colon and rectum that develops as a result of a gradual accumulation of genetic and epigenetic abnormalities that cause uncontrolled proliferation of colonocytes, the cells that line the colon. CRC is a common and diverse disease caused by the cumulative effects of various genetic abnormalities and epigenetic modifications affecting genes that control cell proliferation and differentiation.Apoptosis serves as a safeguard mechanism against tumor genesis. During oncogenic transformation, neoplastic cells become resistant to apoptosis as a result of genetic and epigenetic alterationsP53 is a tumor-suppressor geneP53 alteration is the hallmark of human tumors, and the status of TP53 mutation is associated with the progression and outcome of sporadic CRC. Particularly, TP53 loss of function has been reported in 50–75% of CRC cases. |
