Abstract

Summary
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an endogenous gasotransmitter in mammalian after nitric oxide and carbon monoxide. Biogenesis of endogenous H2S mainly depends on three enzymes: cystathionine gamma lyase (CSE), cystathionine beta synthase (CBS) and 3- mecaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST). CBS is highly expressed in brain and CSE has been demonstrated to be expressed in thoracic aorta, tail artery, mesenteric artery, and pulmonary artery, where the expression of CBS was not detectable.
Stress has been defined as a state of threatened homeostasis which mobilizes a composite spectrum of adaptive physiological and behavioral responses with an aim to restore the challenged body homeostasis. Prolonged stress has been documented to play an important role in depression and neurodegenerative disorders.
This study was carried out on eighty male Wister adult albino rats of local strain weighing 150:200 grams. The animals were housed in groups of 10 each in identical wire-bottomed cages and were divided into the following groups:
group I: (Negative control group); Rats in this group were injected intraperitoneally by 1 ml normal physiological saline daily for 6 days but not subjected to any stress.
group II: (Na2S control group); Rats were injected intraperitoneally by Na2S dissolved in saline (12 mg/kg daily/6 days) (Donatti et al., 2017) and not subjected to any stress.
group III: (Acute stress group); Rats were injected by physiological saline as in group I daily for 6 days then in the 6th day acute stress was evoked. Acute stress was induced by placing rats in cold
