Abstract Within the last few years, otoendoscopes have been in use for inserting trans tympanic ventilation tubes. However, in terms of published studies, only a limited number have investigated the efficacy of endoscopic myringotomy and tube placement in children. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the feasibility of endoscopic ventilation tube insertion in children by comparing the duration and outcomes of endoscopic versus microscopic technique. The study included 24 children attending otolaryngology clinic in Suez Canal university hospital and Ismailia General Hospital in Ismailia Governorate. Patients who were diagnosed as having OME by clinical criteria of OME by otoscopic examination (tympanic membrane retraction, fluid level) and by flat curve type B tympanogram that persistent more than 3 months were randomized into 2 groups. The mean operative time for the endoscopic technique was significantly shorter than that of the microscopic technique (P < 0.05). Also, there was no statistically significant difference of intra-operative bleeding among both groups with more cases with microscopic 5 of 12 versus endoscopic 3 of 12. No serious perioperative complications related to the techniques used had occurred and no statistically significant differences in one, three, and six months follow-up between the two groups. |
