Water is a critical resource for agricultural development hence. Therefore, substituting the traditional irrigation system with modern systems (e.g. sprinkler and drip irrigation) has become essential not only for water saving, but also using the saved quantities of water for irrigating new reclaimed lands thus, boosting food production, improving food security, and attaining agricultural development in Egypt.Within this text, the problem of the current study focuses on the notice that most farmers still use the traditional irrigation system (flood irrigation). Moreover, using flood irrigation results in consuming massive amounts of water and increasing water losses throughout the network of surface irrigation. The study consists of five chapters; the first chapter focuses on the theoretical framework and a literature review for previous studies. Moreover, the second chapter highlights the current situation of the key agricultural resources in Egypt whereas, the third chapter focuses on the selection of the study sample and the economic and production indicators for the study crops. The fourth chapter deals with the production functions and costs for the study crops based on irrigation systems in Sharkia Governorate, the indicators of productive and economic efficiency for the study crops selected in the study sample, and the economic returns of both study crops, as well. The fifth chapter focuses on the production and marketing problems of the study crops, and the current and future aspects related to rationalizing water in agriculture that are included in the Strategy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, as well.
