Abstract

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) has become a growing public health problem that turned into an epidemic. Due to the dramatic increase in its incidence among children as well as the functional impairment in academic, family, and social settings that this disorder causes, raised attention has been paid towards the exact risk factors underlying this disorder. Among the most strongly suggested risk factors, are the dietary patterns of children. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge there was lack of research concerning the relation between dietary patterns and ADHD among Egyptian children. Therefore, the relation between the dietary consumption pattern and nutrient intake among children with ADHD in Ismailia City was carried out by this study.
A matched case-control study was carried out in Ismailia city. Its aim was to prevent childhood morbidity through evaluation of dietary patterns and nutrient intake among children with Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Ismailia City. The main objectives were to identify the dietary patterns and nutrient intake of children with ADHD and to assess the association between those patterns and ADHD.
The study surveyed 433 children aged 3-13 years old and were categorized into three groups; cases, control I, and control II. Children were recruited from two specialized child psychiatry clinics; child psychiatry clinic in Suez Canal University hospital and in Suez Canal Authority hospital.
The caregivers of these children were interviewed using structured interview questionnaires inquiring about the sociodemographic, medical, and social characteristics of the children. Additionally, the dietary intake of these children in
