Abstract

Background: This study aimed to assess the effect of supportive nursing interventions on children with cerebral palsy having feeding difficulties. Research design: A quasi-experimental design was utilized in this study. Setting: The study was conducted at the Neurologic Specialized Clinic at Children’s Hospital affiliated to Ain Shams University Hospitals Subjects: consisted of forty-five children with cerebral palsy having feeding difficulties and their mothers selected from the previously mentioned setting. Tools of Data Collection: Data were collected through using four tools, (1) A Structured Interviewing Questionnaire Format, (2) Body Mass Index to obtain anthropometric measurements of the studied children, (3) Observational Assessment Sheet to assess the child’s ability and feeding difficulties and (4) Supportive nursing interventions’ Construction to improve the nutritional status of children with cerebral palsy having feeding difficulties. Results: This study revealed that there was highly statistical significant difference before and after the supportive nursing interventions. Conclusion: The current study can be concluded that implementation of the supportive nursing interventions improved feeding difficulties among children with CP. In addition, there was statistical significant difference between studied children pre and post implementation of supportive nursing interventions regarding spoon feeding, biting, chewing, cup drinking, swallowing and drooling. Also, the great majority of the studied mothers were improved their knowledge regarding their children with feeding difficulties after implementation of supportive nursing interventions. Recommendations: The study recommended application of the supportive nursing interventions for children with cerebral palsy having feeding difficulties as a main nursing intervention to overcome feeding difficulties and continuous frequent health education programs for the mothers of children with cerebral palsy having feeding difficulties, as well as for nurses who work with cerebral palsy children to improve and develop their skills to overcome feeding difficulties.
