Abstract

The main advantage of castellated steel elements is the increase in the section
depth, this increase in section depth leads to increase in major moment of
inertia and major section modulus of the section without any increase in
weight. The section depth may be increased by 20 to 60%. Castellation
produces many web openings at equal spacings; these web openings may be
circular or hexagonal. In case of circular web openings elements are known as cellular elements and in case of hexagonal web openings, elements are known as castellated elements. Castellated steel elements may be used in a wide range, they may be used as roof beams, portal frame elements and a good solution for curved roof elements, combining weight savings with a low-cost
manufacturing process. It has been noticed that, researches that considered elements subjected to axial and bending moment are limited compared to those considered elements subjected to bending moment only. In this research, the structural behavior of castellated beam-columns is studied under different load eccentricity to investigate the effect of castellation on beam-column strength. Experimental investigation has been performed on twelve short and long castellated beam-column elements. Behavior and strength of castellated beam-columns are also investigated using the finite element analysis utilizing ANSYS [1] software. The finite element results are found to be in a good agreement with their experimental counterparts. A parametric study is conducted to thoroughly investigate and understand the behavior of castellated beam, column and beam-column elements utilizing the Keywords: Castellated Steel Beam-columns, Castellated Steel Beams, Web Opening, FEM modeling, Failure Modes of Beams, Hexagonal Opening, Castellated Column, Buckling Stability and Critical Buckling Load.
