Abstract

Abstract
Background: Concept mapping is a complementary strategy to Problem Based Learning (PBL). Therefore, using concept maps in PBL could improve students’ practices in tutorial sessions. Aim: The current study aimed to study the effect of training program on using concept mapping in the enhancement of PBL practices among nursing students at Suez Canal University. Subjects and methods: A quasi-experimental design was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing in Suez Canal University including a comprehensive sample of first-year students. Data were collected using five tools: students’ knowledge questionnaire about concept mapping, a structured tool for assessment of concept map in PBL, students’ performance in PBL tutorial sessions questionnaire, concept maps developed by students in brainstorming sessions, and students’ opinion about working with concept mapping in PBL scale. Results: The concept mapping training program had a significant positive effect on the knowledge and practice of nursing students. There was a significant correspondence between the preset learning objectives and the learning objectives\issues generated by study groups students compared with control groups at the follow-up phase. Also, there was a significant improvement in nursing students’ attitude towards using concept mapping in PBL tutorial sessions. Conclusion: Concept mapping improves nursing students’ practices in PBL tutorial sessions represented in extracting more learning objectives\issues, improving students’ performance in PBL tutorial sessions, and maximizing their attitude towards using concept mapping in PBL process enhancement and memorization of relevant information. So, it is recommended to take needed measures towards adopting and monitoring using of concept mapping strategy in PBL tutorial sessions as one of the teaching-learning strategies at the Faculty of Nursing in Suez Canal University.
