Abstract
Background: Antenatal care (ANC) plays a crucial role in ensuring maternal and child safety. Male involvement in ANC is among recommendations to improve maternal health. Aim : This study aimed to examine factors affecting the involvement of husbands in antenatal care from wives’ point of view. Study design : A descriptive cross sectional study design was used. Setting : The study was carried out in Antenatal Clinic at Mansoura General Hospital, Mansoura city, Dakahlia governorate, Egypt. Sample type: A convenient sample was utilized. Study Sample: The study sample included 237 pregnant women who attended antenatal clinic for follow up. Tools: Two tools were used: Tool I : A structured interviewing questionnaire. Tool II : factors affecting husbands’ involvement in antenatal care from wives’ point of view questionnaire. Results: The results of the present study detected that slightly more than half of pregnant women’s husband didn’t attend antenatal visits (52 %) due to majority of husband had the lack of men’s cultural involvement for ANC in our society, around two third of husband had lack of time for participation in ANC due to long working hours (61.6 %) and three quarters of husband (75.1 %) had lack of financial support for families during pregnancy by the government from wives’ point of view. Conclusion : There are cultural, personal and interpersonal, socio-economic and health system-related factors affecting husband involvement in ANC from wives’ point of view. Recommendations : tailored messages, specific health education sessions, and innovative strategies for men to increase awareness about importance of their collaborative role in ANC.
