Abstract

Background: Urinary diversion (UD) is a surgical procedure that redirects the flow of urine following a cystectomy. Aim of the study The aim was to design, implement and evaluate the effect of a nurse led intervention on self-care and self-efficacy among patients with UD. Method A quasi experimental research design was used to conduct this study. A purposive sample of (100) UD patients from both sexes was randomly divided into study and control group. Seven tools were used to collect data: Sociodemographic and Health relevant data sheet, Patients’ knowledge questionnaire, Urostomy Education Scale, Exploratory Continent Urinary Diversion Scale, Stoma Self Efficacy Scale, Continent Urinary Diversion Self Efficacy Scale, and Urinary Diversion Quality of Life Questionnaire. Result: After implementation of a nurse led intervention for UD patients, there was a statistical significance difference of the total mean score of knowledge, self-care, self-efficacy and QOL among the study group compared with the control group P value ≤ 0.001. Conclusion: Implementing a nurse led intervention has positive effects on improving total mean scores of knowledges, self- care practice, QOL and enhance self-efficacy for studied urinary diversion patients. Recommendations: Comprehensive educational nursing intervention should be started from the preoperative period.
