Abstract

 In this study, type IIb and III, extension type supra-condylar fractures of humerus in children aged between 1.5 and 9 years, who were treated by closed reduction with either crossed pinning or lateral pinning.
 The cases were prospectively studied for functional outcome following the two types of pin placement.
 The range of age in our study was between 1.5-9 years with a mean age of 5.1 years.
 Boys (21cases) were more commonly affected (70% of cases) than girls (9cases) 30% of cases.
 The left side (18cases) was involved more than right side (12cases) by 60% of cases.
 The mode of trauma was fall to the ground in 19 patients, fall downstairs in 7 patients and fall from height in 4 patients.
 Type III was present in 90% (27cases) while type II b was present in 10% (3 cases).
 15 cases (50% of cases) were treated with lateral pinning and 15 cases (50% of cases) were treated with crossed pinning.
 The average follow-up period was 3 months (range 2.8-3.2 months).
 No iatrogenic neurovascular injuries were found during the study.
 Following lateral divergent pinning, excellent results were found in 93.33% of cases and good results in 6.67% of cases
 There were 86.67% excellent and 13.33% good results in cases treated with lateral parallel pinning.
 The difference in the functional and cosmetic outcome between the two groups was not statistically significant.
