Abstract

A total of 80 of Saidi sheep were used during this work, in two
experiments. The first experiment was executed on 40 mature ewes with
mating-season September 2018 which had almost similar average body
weight (40 kg) and reproductive history. The second experiment was
carried on 40 mature ewes with inmate season January, 2019 which had
almost similar average body weight (40kg) and reproductive history.
Animals in two the experiments were randomly assigned to 4 groups
raised under eight housing system: 1- Semi open type house roofed with
asbestos sheets, 2- A close type roofed with single asbestos roof at 3 m
height 3- A close type roofed with double asbestos roofs at 3 and 3.5 m
height for two roofs, respectively and 4- Open type house shaded under
tree with huge tree in the center. All physiological measurements were
recorded at 15 day interval for ewes at 6:00 a.m. and at 12:00 p.m.
Respiration rate (RR) were measured by counting the flank movements
for one minute. Rectal temperature (RT °C) was measured in centigrade
units by using a clinical thermometer. Skin (ST °C), ear (ET °C) and
wool (WT °C) temperatures were measured by using infrared
thermometer. At the end of the experiment gas volume of respiration
(GV) was measured per minute and tidal volume (TV) was estimated as
GV/RR. Rate of oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide
production (VCO2) were measured using an open-circuit technique.
Exhaled air was analyzed for O2 and CO2 using Servomex 570 Gas
Analyzer.Heat production (HP) (fasting metabolic rate,
kcal.0.75BW.day).
Key words: Saidi ewes, housing, heat production, lambs, heat stress, and
cold stress.
