Abstract

Avian mycoplasmosis is considered as one of the greatest problems that affects poultry industry due to increased carcass condemnation rate, downgrading of carcasses, reduced body weight and egg production as well as increased medications cost. The disease is caused by several pathogenic Mycoplasmas of which Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae are the most important. Mycoplasma gallisepticum causes chronic respiratory disease in chickens. It is distinguished by coughing, nasal discharge and respiratory rales. Mycoplasma synoviae causes respiratory disease and joint inflammation (tenosynovitis). Accurate and rapid diagnosis is essential for controlling this problem.
In this study, two hundred and seven chickens of different ages (2-6 weeks) were obtained from 34 broiler chicken flocks at Sharkia Governorate. All birds were subjected to clinical and post mortem examination. 336 samples were collected from the examined birds including air sacs, tracheas and lungs (112 each) as well as 95 tracheal swabs were collected from other 95 bird.
Digitonin sensitivity test was applied to differentiate between Mycoplasma and Acholeplasma. Mycoplasma is digitonin positive while Acholeplasma is digitonin negative. The incidence of Mycoplasma was 44.1% and the incidence of Acholeplasma was 8.8%.
