Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic syndrome marked by elevated plasma glucose concentrations as a result of insulin resistance or insulin deficiency or both that leads to numerous secondary complications as hyperlipidemia, kidney dysfunction, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, blindness and amputation. So, it is considered a public health crisis that threatens the whole world.
T2DM, the most encountered form associated with obesity, overweight and unhealthy diet. This global rise caused by developing insulin resistance from impaired pancreatic beta cells and inhibiting glucagon production from pancreatic alpha cells. T2DM needs extended medical and patient self-management care in order to handle the abnormality in glucose levels.
Many herbal and natural products have a favorable antidiabetic effect with no side effects and low expenses. Some references reported that Punica Granatum owns anti-diabetic activity. Researches revealed that treatment with extract of Punica Granatum peel extract decreases blood glucose, serum insulin, total cholesterol and serum triglyceride levels and improved glucose tolerance in obese animals. Some results indicated that Punica Granatum may serve as a dietary therapy for hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia.
