Abstract

ackground: Antenatal care is defined as the care provided by skilled health-care professionals to pregnant women to ensure the best health conditions for both mother and baby during pregnancy, therefore the pregnant women’s satisfaction about the perceived quality of ANC can improve their adherence to the antenatal visit, thereby improve the whole health outcomes for both the mother and her fetus.
Aim of the Work: To measure the satisfaction of pregnant women about their perceived quality of antenatal care services
Patients and Methods: A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted from January till April 2021 at 4 primary health centres in Cairo, Egypt according to national quality standards in Egypt. All health centres included in the study are government run facilities.
Results: High overall satisfaction (98%) was reported for the quality of antenatal care in the 4 centers, the highest satisfaction was reported for most of accessibility points, cleanliness of the waiting area, answering inquiries, number of the doctors, discussion of the delivery plan, health education about importance of folic acid and iron supplements, health education about family planning and cost of the service followed by cleanliness of the center, privacy in the examination room, explaining the rationale for investigations, most of physician performance items and how to proceed in most of the serious situations. Satisfaction (<50%) was reported for hours of work, cleanliness of the toilets, taking history, examination time, health education about diet, breastfeeding and how to proceed in case of persistent fever and headache, the harmful effects of passive smoking explanation of the problems by physician. All females who came for repeated visits confirmed the application. Although most women reported that they had the majority of the Egyptian antenatal guidelines covered by their physician, items like past medical history, personal hygiene and Glucose challenge test were missed.
Conclusion: The majority of women were satisfied by the quality of antenatal care services and reported the perception of ANC components, however; low satisfaction with health education components points to the need for new approaches to improve this important aspect of care
