Abstract

Accidents related to fishing vessels are at the top of the marine causalities. The Occupational Safety and Health Branch of the International Labor Organization announced that more than 24000 accidents occur per year in fishing sector. Most of these accidents are due to static and dynamic stability failures. Fishing vessel masters usually rely on their experience to determine the stability level of their vessels, and not always, this is the right decision to save the ship. Moreover, fishermen are not educated enough to read stability booklets. The main objective of this work is providing loading guidance for fishermen to avoid loss of stability. In this thesis, stability of an existing fishing vessel is studied. Different loading conditions are assumed and the stability is studied for each condition. The worst stability conditions are defined and factors affecting the ship stability is also studied. Since most fishing vessels in Egypt are built traditionally, with no guidance and approval from naval architects, the design is not at its optimum level. To assure better stability, a modification in the tank design and ballast management is suggested. Stability is again studied after this modification to assure that the ship has enough stability. Eventually, recommendations for the appropriate loading of the ship is given to avoid ship capsize or stability loss.
