Abstract

This thesis focuses on the analysis of the Coptic cities: using stylistic, iconography and technical analyses. It includes also a number of cities during the period from the fourth to the seventh century AD. The first chapter entitled ”the Origin of the Coptic Cities and the Appearance of the Different Industries” deals with the study of the introduction of christianity in Egypt, and the industries which the Copts were famous in this era. In the second chapter, entitled ”the Factors that Influenced the Coptic Industries”, the researcher discusses the economic factors that faced Egyptian cities at that time, the political factors and the way of managing the Byzantine government in Egypt. The third chapter, entitled “Industrial Coptic Cities in Egypt from the Fourth to the Seventh Century AD”, includes most of the industrial cities that had a clear impact on the economy during the Byzantine period and were famous for the presence of Copts in them. The fourth chapter, entitled ”Architecture Elements of the Industrial Cities and the Recent Discoveries”, contains the antiquities that were discovered in Coptic industrial cities such as the fixed architectural monuments and the transferred monuments.
