Abstract

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) represent one of the frequent and serious complications that may occur after CABG surgery this may lead to further substantial morbidity and mortality. So our objective in this study is to determine the incidence of AF in the immediate postoperative period of patients undergoing on-pump and off-pump CABG to determine if there is significant difference between the 2 groups regarding the incidence of AF within the 1st 24 hours postoperative or not.
Patient and Methods: We prospectively studied 70 adult consecutive patients scheduled for isolated CABG surgery during the period between march 2019 and march 2020 for the incidence of atrial fibrillation. The patients were allocated in 2 groups where 35 patients in each group. group A-On pump coronary artery bypass (ONCAB) and group B-Off pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB). Occurrence of postoperative AF was defined as the development of postoperative AF in on-pump and off-pump CABG in the 1st 24 hours postoperative period documented by electrocardiogram (ECG) and lasting longer than 10 minutes or requiring medical treatment due to clinical instability. Patient preoperative characteristics, as well as intraoperative, CPB, and postoperative management variables were evaluated.
Results: The incidences of immediate postoperative AF in the ONCAB group was 8.6% and in the OPCAB group was 5.7% with no significant difference between the two groups.
Conclusion: Postoperative AF is a frequent arrhythmia independent of the type of surgical procedure and the incidence of immediate postoperative AF is not affected by the technique of the procedure whether CBP is used or not.
