Abstract

The ankle joint injuries are a common emergency. They are usually due to a sprain related to sports, walking, falling or road traffic accident.
Ankle joint has a complex anatomy, so MRI is considered the modality of the choice in evaluating patients with ankle problems due to its multiplanar capabilities, excellent soft-tissue contrast, ability to image bone marrow, noninvasiveness, and lack of ionizing radiation.
The ankle joint is composed with bones surrounded by three groups of ligaments and four groups of tendons. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of MRI in the detection of abnormalities and injuries associated with post traumatic ankle joint.
This study included 60 patients presented with different complaints after ankle trauma. Precise history was taken, and MR scan was done to all of them.
We found that:
➢ For ankle tendons:
Achilles tendon was the most commonly injured ankle tendon followed by TP tendon in the medial ankle compartment while those of the anterior compartment were the least encountered ones. Tenosynovitis was the most encountered tendon pathology followed by tendinosis.
➢ For ankle ligaments:
The ATFL was the most frequently torn ligament (60 %) and in most cases it was the isolated injury. This was followed by deltoid injury (40 %) that accompanied ATFL injury in most of cases. PTFL, CFL and syndesmotic ligaments had no cases in our study.
