Abstract

The use of ultrasound in brain mass lesion resection is a real-time capability of this imaging. Ultrasound may provide an alternative tool to intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for delineating tumor tissues and improving the chances of gross total resection.
This study was conducted to describe the role of intraoperative ultrasound in evaluating brain tumors regarding; localization, extension, characterization and extent of resection. Thirty-one patients were recruited for evaluation.
The mean age of the patients was 34 years (range 4-65 years). There were 15 males (48%) and 16 females (52%).
Pre-operative contrasted MRI brain was done for all patients and some of them -according to the expected pathology- did CT brain, to study location and characters of brain tumors.
