Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the ability of Musca domestica
(housefly) larval haemolymph (insect blood) to display the enhanced
in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic effects. The oxidative stress (OS)
was elicited by inducing lipopolysaccharides (LPS) injection as an
exogenous stressor. Third instar larvae were injected with LPS and the
haemolymph was collected from control and challenged larvae at 6,
12 and 24 h post-injection. Changes in protein pattern of larval
haemolymph were determined using SDS-PAGE analysis.
Determination of superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), glutathione (GSH),
malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), as well
as mRNA and protein expression of SOD1, were investigated as
confirmatory markers of oxidative stress. Cytotoxicity on cancerous
MCF-7 and normal Vero cells were also evaluated using MTT assay at
24 h for the control and challenged haemolymph.
