Abstract

ABSTRACT
The use of stiffened perforated cold-formed steel (CFS) channel sections are becoming increasingly popular for upright members in cold-formed steel structures, the main application is steel storage perforated rack uprights.
This thesis presents an experimental investigation into the behavior of stiffened perforated cold-formed steel (CFS) uprights subjected to axial compression. Material tensile tests were carried out to determine the material properties of cold-formed steel uprights. A total of 17 perforated specimens were tested under axial compression, including five different cross-sections, various total lengths, these experimental tests were performed to obtain the ultimate load applied, along with the measurement of the displacements and their structural behavior was described. In these experimental tests, the perforations were found to affect the ultimate axial compression capacity and buckling failure mode of uprights.
In the numerical investigation, finite element analysis for stiffened perforated channel sections uprights were developed with use of ANSYS. The results showed good agreement with the experimental test results. Next, the verified finite element models were used for the purposes of a parametric study comprising 9 models. The effect of absence of perforations on the ultimate axial compression capacity and the buckling failure modes were investigated. Based on the results obtained from the parametric analysis, the comparison between perforated and non-perforated specimens are provided.
