Abstract

This study aimed to assess stressors and coping styles for mothers having infant with trachea-esophageal fistula. Study Design: A descriptive design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: This study was conducted at Ain shams, Al-Azhar and Cairo University Hospital, at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Pediatric Surgery Department (PSD). Subjects: A purposive sample composed of one hundred studied mothers of infant diagnosed with tracheoesophageal fistula, age from 1 day to 12 month, from both sex, attending to the previous mentioned settings through 6 months period for the management and follow-up. Data collection tools: Interviewing Questionnaire, Hospital stressors Scale to assess physical, psychological and social stressor, hospital anxiety and depression rating scale and coping behavioural scale to assess mothers’ coping. Results: revealed that, more than one third of studied mothers have phsycial, psychosocial and social stressors. And more than half of the studied uses passive coping styles. Conclusion: Mothers having infant with tracheoesophageal fistula, had moderate anxiety and depression level related to their infant condition, resulting from facing sever physical, psychological and social stressors. More than half of the studied mothers had passive coping styles. Also; there is a relation between characteristics of studied mothers and their types of stressors and coping styles. Recommendations: Empower the mothers having infant with tracheoesophageal fistula through counseling to overcome the stressors.
