Abstract Egyptian plant extracts have been used since ancient times for treatment of various diseases. Focus on plants research has increased recently all over the world, especially in the field of anticancer research. Screening for biological activities of Sonchus oleraceus Family Asteraceaehas been carried out at The National Cancer Institute,Cairo,Egypt. The plant was collected from its natural environment (Damietta), dried and extracted with 90% methanol to obtain methanol extract. Fractionation of the methanol extract was carried out using chromatographic techniques. Two flavonoids, two phenolic acid esters and β-sitosterol were isolated from the plant extract and their structures were elucidated using spectroscopic techniques, including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS). The isolated compounds showed promising anticancer activityin the Sulpho-Rhodamine B assay. Further investigation was established in vivo to confirm their cytotoxic activity using Erlich’s Ascites Carcinoma model,The plant extract and flavonoids showed a significant reduction of tumor weight andsignificant results at the investigation of antioxidant markers, The extract showed apoptotic induction in the histopathological examination. |
