Abstract

Summary of Thesis
Mouth care intervention has a crucial role in preventing mucositis among pediatric patients
who were admitted to PICU and undergoing mechanical ventilation. The Aim of the present study:
Examine the effect of oral care by using oral health care protocol in preventing mucositis among
ventilated children at pediatric intensive care unit Subjects & method: Quasi-experimental research
design was used in this study. The study included 60 children (>6 years age) admitted to PICU and
needed mechanical ventilation. They were two groups: group one (30 children) who received oral care
intervention (using tooth brushing and 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate solution) and group two (30
children) who received routine hospital care. Tools: socio-demographic and clinical data structured
interview questionnaire, oral mucositis assessment scale, and oral cavity assessment tool. Results: The
majority of patients (93.3%) in group one (study) had a normal oral condition after intervention,
compared to 10.0% had normal oral condition in group two (control) after intervention with a highly
statistically significant difference between the studied groups. In conclusion: Oral care intervention
using tooth brushing and CHX gluconate reduced significantly the occurrence of mucositis in
mechanically ventilated children. Recommendations: The use of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate as an
oral rinse is recommended for orally intubated patien
