Abstract

Malnutrition in children is common globally, and may result in both short and long term irreversible negative health outcomes.
Objective: This study was to assess the effect of clover honey supplementation on the anthropometric measurements and lipid profile of malnourished infants and children.
Subjects & Methods: This was Prospective interventional clinical trial done on 20 malnourished infants and children with an age range of 1-5 years. The children were recruited from Pediatric Nutrition Clinic of Ain Shams University. The children received honey supplementation for 3 months and anthropometric measurements including (weight, height, body mass index, head circumference, mid arm circumference) and serum cholesterol level were measured at baseline and after 3 months of honey consumption.
Results: the results of our study showed that 3 months honey consumption has a significant positive effects on increasing weight, height, and body mass index and lowering in serum cholesterol level of malnourished infants and children.
Conclusion: Our study showed that 3 months honey consumption in a group of malnourished infants and children resulted in such positive effects; increased body weight, height, body mass index and lowering in serum cholesterol level.
