Abstract

A
ccording to Curtiss, (2014) an addictive personality refers to a particular set of personality traits that make an individual predispose to develop behavior disturbances. This hypothesis states that there are common elements among people with varying addictive behaviors that relates to personality traits. People who have addictive behaviors characterized by: a physical or psychological dependency that negatively affects their quality of life.
International nurses society on addiction, (2014) noted that, lack of adequate training, fixed, inappropriate attitudes or beliefs about patients who have addictive behaviors and their treatment, time constraints, fear of losing patients, lack of insurance coverage act as barriers in availing the opportunity of diagnosing and treating patients with addictive behaviors, attitudes, beliefs and confidence levels were considered as one of the most important of these barriers.
A quasi-experimental design was used on 60 nurses who work with clients who have addictive behavior problems at Abbassia Mental Health Hospital..
The aim of the study was to:
 Determine the impact of addictive behavior program on clinical performance of mental health nurses. The following tools were used to achieve the aim of the study:
Tool (1) Addictive Behavior Attitudes Questionnaire (ABAQ):
This tool was designed by investigator. It included (34 items) to measured health professionals’ attitudes towards addictive behavior and identifies five attitudes: (A) treatment intervention consist of 11 items, (B) treatment optimism consist of 7 items, (C) permissiveness consist of 6 items, (D) non-moralism consist of 5 items, (E) non-stereotypes consist of 5items.
(2) Addiction Knowledge Questionnaire (AKQ):
It designed by (Adel, 2012) to assess nurses’ knowledge level about addiction.
(3) Pre- Post Clinical Performance Assessment (CPA):
This tool was designed by investigator to assess level of clinical performance for mental health nurses towards addictive behaviors.
The main result of the study showed that:
• A statistically significant correlation between total practices of the studied nurses and their knowledge regarding addictive behavior at p< 0. 01.
• A statistical significant difference found between pre-program nurses attitude and post –program level toward addictive behavior throughout the intervention (p>0.05).
• A statistical significant difference found between pre and post program regarding performance level (p>0.05).
• A statistical significant difference found between pre and post program regarding addiction knowledge (p 0.001).
• A positive correlation was found between total practices of the studied nurses and their total attitude regarding addictive behavior throughout the intervention at p> 0. 01.
Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that:
The results of the present study revealed that there was significant improvement due to the following items: - attitudes of nurses and their clinical skills during working with patients who have addictive behaviors, relation between total practices of the studied nurses and their total knowledge regarding addictive behavior throughout the program. So, this study shown that a training program which was delivered by an experienced trainer was an effective way to improve therapeutic attitudes and knowledge, and these improvements can be through clinical performance of the nurses regarding addictive behaviors.
Recommendation:
The study recommended that. Develope program in this study could be utilized by nursing educators in psychiatric hospitals as a framework in planning function and in evaluating the clinical performance of psychiatric nurses. Short courses workshops are recommended to deliver sequentially in short spaced schedules for nurses.Development of similar programs in other management components to improve clinical nurses skills.
