Abstract

Planning and alignment of man-made maritime water areas such Damietta
Port, have to be carefully designed to guarantee natural water renewal and
adequate tidal flushing. Stagnant water areas could consist in ports, islands,
channels, and any structure that block the natural water flow. The water
renewal and flushing rate properties of Damietta Port basin investigated as a
response of relevant natural hydrodynamic drivers. A two-dimensional
model uses the equations of continuity and conservation of momentum, was
used to simulate the flow circulation pattern and the distribution of pollutants
concentrations in the port basin, under the forces of varying water level and
wind. The study was set up a hydrodynamic model for Damietta port, to
assess water quality of the port basin area. The tidal and wind data were used
as input to the model to simulate tidal currents in the port basin. Then, the
results were used as input to run an advection-dispersion model to simulate
the spread and the movement of a conservative tracer material, through
which the flushing time of the port basin estimated. Using the exponential
continuously stirred tank reactor method, the whole basin flushing time and
the residence time for each part of the basin determined by calculating the
retention time for 37% of a tracer material initial concentration for each of
six monitoring points within the basin. The results showed that there is a
good exchange of the fresh water between the port basin and the
Mediterranean Sea.
