Abstract

Renal transplantation is the first-choice method of renal replacement for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate the effect of a health education program on coping and quality of life on kidney recipients. This quasi-experimental study was carried out in the kidney transplantation outpatient clinics at Nasr City Health Insurance Hospital. The sample consisted of 77 adult renal transplant patients. The data were collected using an interview questionnaire including Jalowiec Coping Scale and the SF-12v2 Quality of Life (QoL) scale; a transcription form. The researcher designed a health education program according to patient’s needs; the effectiveness of the program was assessed through post and 3-month follow-up tests. The result shows that the implementation of the educational program was effective in improving patients’ knowledge, practice of infection control and self-care skills, and emotional coping strategies. The study recommends implementation of the educational program with more focus on the use of various coping strategies, and longer follow-up evaluation.
