Abstract

Music in the form of rhythm and pattern can be used as a form of adjuvant intervention alongside other forms of therapy to help improve the auditory skills, sensory perception, and communication of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In this study music has played a role in improvement in some of the skills of children with ASD in regards to auditory discrimination of rhythmic pattern of musical stimuli, auditory attention, as well as auditory memory. The use of music has also improved the perception of auditory sensory stimuli. All these skills play an important role in the general improvement of children with ASD in regards to speech and language, non-verbal communication, as well as the child’s behavior. This in turn will lead to an overall level of improvement in all skills. Children with ASD perceive music much easier than language as it is the simple form of language, thus therapist-child and parent-child interaction might improve.
In addition, the integration of the component of the eyes closed in our intervention may help the improvement in the isolation of the auditory skills in children with ASD. This will further encourage the child to only use the auditory skills to detect perceived auditory stimuli as it is mentioned in previous studies that the visual perception skills of children with ASD is much higher than their auditory skills.
The early integration of music in the intervention, alongside other forms of intervention, is important as it enhances neurological changes in the brain regarding the auditory component. These changes will play a role in the improvement in auditory skills on the long run for children with ASD. Thus, improve the overall outcome and development of therapy.
The use of music can be easily incorporated during different therapy sessions, and nurseries, schools, and at home. Different musical instruments can be used that are easy to access and are present in the child’s everyday environment. Daily activities through direct instruction can be integrated in the child’s daily schedule through parent-training may also play an important role in incorporating music as a natural form of intervention in the child’s schedule. Music provides a rich medium for communication, which in turn will improve joint interaction. Consequently this might help improve the whole family dynamics.
Music programs can be used in the form of one to one sessions or group sessions with direct follow-up. The follow-up will help the recording of the child’s progress as well as the addition of more goals. The direct follow up of the child’s progress is crucial in the process of improvement.
