Abstract

Laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal repair (TAPP) is widely accepted in elective inguinal hernioplasty. TAPP repair is a feasible and safe technique, resulting in less post-operative pain associated with rapid recovery and satisfaction rate as documented by less post-operative pain, early mobilization and discharge from the hospital, as well as early return to usual activities and less post-operative complication. TAPP repair allows detection and repair of occult contralateral defects.
We recommend TAPP repair as the procedure of choice in elective groin hernia repair especially in bilateral cases.
Summary
Inguinal hernias present with a swelling in the groin that goes away with minimal pressure or when the patient is lying down. Inguinal hernias account for 75% of all abdominal wall hernias.
Groin hernia repair is considered to be one of the most commonly performed operations by general surgeons.
There are many methods for dealing with groin hernias. These methods include the classic open techniques; both tissue approximation and tension free techniques and the recent laparoscopic methods. No doubt that controversy will continue to rage over optimal approach to hernia repair. The problem has remained the same, the anatomy has not altered, the patients are similar and the principles of repair changed with the aid of new technology and materials.
The laparoscopic surgical treatment of groin hernia continues to undergo everyday a new technical modification. Of greatest importance, TAPP approach offers clear advantages to open procedures in terms of the size of the incision with improved cosmoses, less postoperative pain or discomfort, reduced recovery time allowing an earlier return to work and full activity, ability to treat bilateral hernias, and the ability to perform simultaneous diagnostic laparoscopy. These results are the real impetus behind the development of laparoscopic hernial repair procedures.
This study has been conducted on 50 patients of both sexes, small size inguinal hernia patients, unilateral and bilateral hernia, using laparoscopic TAPP approach. The provisional results of this study showed that, it is safe, effective with fewer complications. The results of this study were encouraging, we have had a great progress in this procedure and most of the patients had excellent results although much longer follow up period is required before judging this new modality.
