Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the 5th most common solid tumors worldwide, and the 3rd cause of cancer-related death due to frequent chemo-resistance and tumor relapse. Recent studies show that the malignancy of HCC can be attributed partly to the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which are capable to self-renew, differentiate and initiate tumor formation. In the present study, we isolated and identify the differential expression pattern of CD133 and CD90 from primary HCC tumors to aim targeting CD133+ and CD90+ as a novel therapeutic HCC-CSCs biomarker. We isolated CSCs sub-population in HCC that characterized by their CD133+ and CD90+ phenotype by flow cytometry. Also the CD133+/CD90+ cells demonstrated a more aggressive phenotype than the CD133-/CD90- counterpart. Herein, our study highlights several novel findings regarding the utility of (Manuka honey (MH), which is well known for its anti-bacterial and wound healing properties but its anticancer role against HCC-CSCs cells and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain uninvestigated), and (Frankincense essential oil (FEO), which is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities and might possess anti-cancer activities, based on their anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic activities) as a potential anti-cancer agent on CSCs in HCC.
