Abstract

This study was conducted to clinically evaluate the effect of using two different forms of membranes (occlusive and perforated) on horizontal bone augmentation at implant site.
Twenty candidate patients were recruited for this study (10 candidates for each group) who fulfilled the eligibility criteria with cases of partial edentulism, in whom horizontal bone augmentation was required for esthetic or functional reasons prior to implant placement.
Clinical examination and cone beam computerized tomographic scans (CBCT) were used to perform three-dimensional assessment of the alveolar ridge morphology and determination of the bone defect size and site for both studied group.
Data were explored for normality by checking the data distribution and using Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk tests. Comparisons between the two study groups with respect to normally distributed numeric variables were done using the independent t-test. Comparisons over time regarding numeric variables were done by paired t test. For categorical variables, differences were analyzed with Chi- square test. All p-values are two-sided. P-values ≤0.05 were considered significant.
This resulted in a higher mean value in perforated barrier membrane group (8.44±1.07 mm), in comparison to (7.10±1.37 mm) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane. Independent t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.026) as in Horizontal bone thickness measurement.
As for Clinical gain in alveolar ridge, a higher mean value of bone gain was recorded in perforated barrier membrane group (4.94±0.72), in comparison to (3.25±0.75) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane. Independent t test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.00).
As in the Histomorphogenic Analysis of Horizontal augmentation, a higher mean value of NVB% was recorded in perforated barrier membrane group (45.71±3.92), in comparison to (35.52±3.61) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane. Regarding RG%, a higher mean value was recorded in perforated barrier membrane group (36.76±3.83), in comparison to (14±2.16) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane. Independent t test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.00) in RG% and NVB%.
Regarding Connective tissue (CT%), A higher mean value of CT% was recorded in occlusive collagen barrier membrane (50.49±4.65), in comparison to perforated barrier membrane group (17.54±5.44). Independent t test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.00).
As for the Radiographic results, A higher mean value was recorded in perforated barrier membrane group (8.68±0.98), in comparison to (7.46±1.29) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane when comparing horizontal ridge augmentation. Independent t test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.029).
A higher mean value was recorded in perforated barrier membrane group (4.96±0.78), in comparison to (3.26±0.66) in occlusive collagen barrier membrane. Independent t test revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups (p=0.00) when comparing radiographical alveolar ridge gain.
