Abstract

Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, and it is the most common cause of chronic pelvic pain. About 24 to 40% of women with chronic pelvic pain diagnosed with endometriosis, which includes a variety of symptoms as dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia, fatigue, dyschezia, and dysuria. So that it had a negative impact on women’s health and wellbeing, (Armour et al., 2019).
Studies of endometriosis are critical and sensitive for all females across the life span, also studying strategies & self-management therapies or lifestyle interventions for alleviating endometriosis-related symptoms is an essential issue in managing endometriosis symptoms.
The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of nursing strategies on alleviating endometriosis-related symptoms. An intervention study had been implemented at gynecological clinics in Omam Hospital.
A purposive sampling technique was used by selecting all cases admitted to the gynecological clinics and meeting the study’s criteria (All women diagnosed with endometriosis ”minimal, mild &moderate grade” regardless of their age, educational level and parity, Had telephone number for contact, & Free from any medical or gynecological problems except endometriosis).
Data collection has been carried out throughout the period from the first of November 2018 till the end of November 2019.
It has been done through three tools: the first was Endometriosis Structured Interviewing Questionnaire that was designed by the researcher to assess women’s general characteristics, menstrual history, obstetric & gynecological history, history related to endometriosis to assess woman’s knowledge regarding endometriosis, to assess woman’s self-care practices for alleviating endometriosis-related symptoms.
The second tool was the Endometriosis Health Profile Questionnaire: It was adopted from (Jenkinson, Kennedy & Jones, 2001). It contains three parts: the first part to assess endometriosis’s impact on women’s health, work-life & sexual relation. The second part, ”visual analog scale”, is used to assess the subject’s pain intensity level. The third part ”The Fatigue Severity Scale,” was used to evaluate fatigue’s impact on women.
The third tool was the Follow-up sheet: As reported by women included in the study, to assess women compliance for nursing strategies, which include” the date of follow-up, nutrition, exercise, and pain & stress management)
The present study revealed that:
• In about 55% of the study sample, their time onset of symptoms was > 8 years. Concerning time from diagnosis, 41.7% of the study sample was> 3years. Moreover, 48.3% of the study sample mild stage of endometriosis.
• Regarding family history, about 55% of the study sample have a family history of endometriosis.
• Concerning women’s knowledge regarding endometriosis, there is a highly statistically significant difference in women’s knowledge regarding endometriosis after implementing nursing strategy and at follow-up time compared to their knowledge before it.
• Regarding women self-care practices for alleviating endometriosis-related symptoms, the current study shows a statistically significant difference in women’s self-care practices for alleviating endometriosis-related symptoms before implementing nursing strategy versus after implementation of the nursing strategy.
• In addition, there is a highly statistically significant difference in women’s general health after implementing nursing strategy compared to their general health before it. In contrast, there is no statistically significant difference in women’s work-life after implementing nursing strategy compared to their work-life before it.
• Moreover, there is a highly statistically significant difference in women’s sexual relations after implementing nursing strategy compared to their sexual relations before adding to a highly statistically significant difference in their total EHP-30.
• Concerning the study sample according to their pains, there is a highly statistically significant difference in women pelvic pains after implementing the nursing strategy compared to their pains before it.
• Moreover, there is a highly statistically significant difference in women fatigue after implementing nursing strategy compared to fatigue before it.
• Besides, there is a correlation between Endometriosis Health Profile (endometriosis-related symptoms), pain, the fatigue of the studied sample, and women’s compliance for nursing strategies ”diet, exercises & stress management”.
Based on the findings of the current study, it concluded that: The current study’s findings supported the present study’s hypothesis and aim, which stated that women who received nursing strategies had a positive correlation between Endometriosis Health Profile (endometriosis-related symptoms), pain, the fatigue of the studied sample, and compliance for nursing strategies” diet, exercises& stress management”. The researcher recommended that: Awareness programs should be developed up to raise women’s knowledge regarding endometriosis and self-care management. For further research: evaluate the effect of nursing strategies versus other methods on alleviating endometriosis related symptoms.
