Abstract

Each individual using language to communicate with others. The normal person using phonetic language but the deaf using sign language. There are differences in semantic and syntax between the phonetic and sign language. So, all of them are having trouble dealing with the other. Many researches focus on translate sign language trying to overcome this problem and reduce the gap between the normal and hearing-impaired. This thesis aims to assist the hearing-impaired people to communicate with normal people by translate Arabic sign language (ArSL) of hearing-impaired to speech and speech to ArSL. So, it works on building real-time translating Arabic sign language system using mechatronic approach and speech recognizer. This system has two parts. The first part translates ArSL to phonetic language by using mechatronic technique. A Data Glove (DG) was built by flex sensors to get the hand gesture of ArSL and converts it to digital data. This data is interrupted to speech via sound knowledge base for Arabic phonetic language. The second part translates Arabic phonetic language to ArSL by using Speech Recognizer for Arabic language to translate speech to text, then translate text to ArSL via video knowledge base for Arabic language. This system is characterized by mobile, real-time translation, easy in usage and supports Arabic language.
