Abstract Cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) is the type member of the genus ―Comovirus‖. It has been recently classified under the family ―Secoviridae‖ due to its resemblance to the animal picornviruses. Its host cowpea is considered as one of the most important legume crops, not only in Egypt but worldwide due to its high nutritional value as a source of protein. More recently, it has shown high value as a tool in biotechnology. A survey was conducted for the detection of CPMV in 2 governorates namely Alexandria and El Beheira in 2011/2012. An overall infection rate of 6% in 200 collected samples was verified by ELISA indicating the presence, but not spread of the virus in surveyed areas. Molecular detection by PCR was conducted using synthetic specific oligonucleotides for CPMV CP and RNA2 in collected leaf samples. |
