Abstract Large amounts of particulate matter are emitted into the atmosphere of populated and industrialized urban areas. Organic compounds of biogenic and anthropogenic origin often represent a large fraction, up to 40%, of aerosol (Chow et al., 2010) with concentrations ranging from a few pgm_3 to hundreds ngm_3 (Gogou et al., 2008). Anthropogenic emissions among other sources include fossil fuel (diesel and gasoline) combustion from mobile and stationery sources (Rogge et al., 2011a), road dusts (Rogge et al., 2012b), and coal. (Mastral and Callen, 2011) combustion. Wind erosion of leaf epicuticular waxes, vegetation debris and microbial degradation are considered as the most important biogenic sources of organic compounds (Rogge et al., 2012c). |
