Abstract

Schizophrenia is one of the most important public health problems in the world. It impacts on individual’s quality of life. Health locus of control has been an important factor in understanding the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia. AIM: To explore the relation between quality of life and locus of control among schizophrenic patients. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: DESIGN: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized for the current study. SETTING: This study was carried out in psychiatric out-patient clinic at Port Said Psychiatric Health Hospital. Subjects: The study subjects comprised of a convenience sample with total number of 150 schizophrenic patients Tools: Tool I: Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale, Tool II: General Locus of Control Scale in addition to Personal and Clinical data sheet. RESULTS: there was a statistically significant relation between total quality of life and presence of antipsychotic side effects and duration of hospitalization. Locus of control was found to be significantly associated with working status and educational level, while there was a statistically significant correlation between quality of life and locus of control. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that most of studied patients have high quality of life and external locus of control. In addition, it was found that there is a significant positive correlation between the total score of quality of life of patients with schizophrenia and total score of locus of control. RECOMMENDATIONS: The study recommended developing educational strategies regarding locus of control to encourage patients to attribute their ill health to the events under their own control rather than to ‘chance.’
