Abstract

Tinnitus is a phantom auditory sensation characterized by conscious perception of a sound in the absence of an actual external sound source. Previous studies reported that tinnitus concentration, attention ability and hearing performance, even in normal hearing patients.
The sound source localization ability is one of the higher functions of the hearing system. Binaural hearing is important for sound source Localization as it important for the perception of interaural intensity differences (IID) and interaural time differences (ITD).
As the effect of tinnitus on sound source localization is still controversial. The aim of this study is to test sound source localization accuracy in tinnitus patients with normal hearing threshold.
This study involved two groups of people first group consist of 20 tinnitus patients and the second one consist of 20 normal persons who never experienced tinnitus before both groups have normal hearing thresholds.
Sound source localization accuracy at horizontal plane tested in two conditions (quiet and noise) in sound treated room using 5 speakers at 22.5-degree intervals between every two speakers, that is assessed by measuring error score which is calculated by scoring 1 point for each 22.5 degrees of difference between the stimulus-presenting speaker and the speaker identified by the subject.
Results showed that tinnitus group have statistically significant higher total error score in sound source localization test in comparing with control group using different stimuli. This significant increase in TES in tinnitus patients is more evident with noise. Considering these results we think that tinnitus is mainly central in origin.
