Abstract

Osteoarthritis is one of most disabling diseases that affects elderly worldwide. Bad dietary habits play a crucial role in initiating and aggravating severity of osteoarthritis as confirmed by different studies
The aim of the current research was to study BMI and dietary habits among osteoarthritic patients attending geriatric department in Alexandria Main University Hospital.
Specific objectives included determination of associations between dietary habits and osteoarthritis among the geriatric patients, as well as identifying the relation between BMI and osteoarthritis.
To accomplish these aims, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 168 patients clinically diagnosed with osteoarthritis attending geriatric department at Alexandria Main University Hospital (AMUH).
The patients were subjected to full history taking through an Arabic questionnaire to collect data related to their Socio-demographic characteristics, medical history, grades and joints affected by osteoarthritis and dietary habits and physical activity among recruited patients.
A transfer sheet was used to record the existing information in the patient`s medical sheet. Also the anthropometric measurements of the patients were measured such as their weight, height, BMI, waist and hip circumferaces and waist to hip ratio
The present study revealed the following results:
The age of studied group ranged from 65-80 years with a mean of 67.66+2.17. The majority of studied sample were females (83.9%).More than two thirds of the cases (71.4%) were from rural area and 28.6 % were urban residents. More than half of studied group (57.7%) were married.
Nearly two thirds of the studied group were belonging to reading and writing group (61.9%). Slightly less than two thirds of cases were not working (64.9%).The family income (Egyptian pound L.E) per month was more than 2000 L.E for 67.3% of cases.
For females (n=141) The parity was three or more in 77 cases (45.8%), twice in 33 cases (19.6%),and once in 22 cases (13.1%), while 9 cases were nullipara (5.3%).
Regarding family size slightly less than half of cases had family size equal five or more (45.8%), while 29.8% of cases had family size equal four, and 19% of cases had family size equal three. Only 5.3% of cases had family size equal two.
More than half of the cases had severe degree of OA (55.4%), 25.6% were moderate and 19% were mild. The most commonly affected joint was the knee( 88.1%) followed by hip (28.1%) and ankle and foot in 41 patients (24.6%), while shoulder was affected in 25 patients (15.0%).
Regarding treatment slightly less than half of the cases (47%) used non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and 30.4% of cases tried corticosteroid injections for knee osteoarthritis.
