Abstract The use of traditional medicines in the management of Diabetes mellitus and to measure and evaluate the abundance, distribution of the species in the north-western desert of Egypt were the main two objectives of the present study. Results showed that Burg El-Arab- El-Hammam location proved to harbor the largest number of the surveyed medicinal plant species compared to the other locations. About 45.45% of interviewees acknowledged the use of both Artemisia herba-alba and Olea europaea to treat DM, followed by Artemisia monosperma. At Omayed location, Trigonella foenum-graecum mentioned by the largest number of interviewees, followed by Artemisia monosperma. For Dabaa location, 50% of the interviewees agreed that Pituranthos tortuosus and Trigonella foenum-graecum as the most important medicinal species in the area used to treat DM followed by Lupinus termis, Morus alba, and Olea europaea. At Matruh location, Citrullus colocynthis, and Hordeum vulgare were of significant importance for DM treatment in the region. Also, Silybum marianum, Retama raetam, and Trigonella foenum-graecum medicinally used by local inhabitants. For all locations, the largest number of species was prepared by decoction while other species were prepared by infusion or in the form of powder or eaten fresh. |
