Abstract Hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) is a heavy metal that is widely used in several industries throughout the world. However, increased usage of Cr (VI) and its improper disposal cause various health hazards. These hazards are not only restricted to workers exposed to Cr (VI) in industrial areas, but they also overreach the general population through contaminated food and water. Cr (VI) was found to be highly carcinogenic and toxic to various body organs specifically the thyroid gland; it induces severe thyroid gland toxicity through oxidative stress and disruption of the redox balance of the thyroid gland tissues. Interestingly, growing evidences revealed the protective role of some natural antioxidants against Cr (VI) induced thyroid gland toxicity. |
