Abstract

Prior research on social enterprises has largely ignored to examine bricolage (i.e. resource mobilization) behaviors in limited resource environments prevalent in the developing countries. The current study has developed some overarching research questions aimed at understanding the dynamics behind the bricolage behaviors exhibited by well-established social enterprises operating in Egypt. It has also attempted to explore a conceptual model reflecting the factors aimed at enhancing the sustainability potential of Egyptian social enterprises. A mixed method approach, combining a principal quantitative survey design over 50 purposively selected social enterprises, followed by a qualitative multiple descriptive case study design of 10 social entrepreneurs, was adopted. Results of the study provided support for the role of social entrepreneurial bricolage in improving the sustainability potential of social enterprises, while being partially mediated by social bricolage. Additionally, the qualitative analysis resulted in a total of 12 categories of sustainability challenges. Moreover, the theory of social bricolage has supported the typology of behavioral responses exhibited by social entrepreneurs and was mainly represented by seven sub-constructs along with five sub-processes underlying them. These results could help potential social entrepreneurs get accustomed to the strategies needed to scale up their social ventures based on the experiences of successfully well-established social enterprises. The study concluded by offering a number of policy recommendations aimed at creating an enabling social entrepreneurship support ecosystem in Egypt.
