Abstract Mantis shrimp stomatopods are benthic, marine, predatory crustaceans that live in defendable burrows .They are common predatory crustaceans in the Gulf of Mexic Caldwel & Dingle,1976;Caldwell,1991). They are also found along the coast of Brazil and in the Mediterranean Sea (Bauer 1999).They are distinguished by a pair of large raptorial appendages shaped like a jack-knives, which are used in preying on small shrimp and fish (Wortham -Neal,2002).They are long, shrimp like crustaceans with sharp spines on the tail, two well developed eyes on short stalks, and long claws at fold neatly out of sight under the head. They feed on various fish and invertebrates, and are fast, very efficient predators. The long claw is sharp, strong and toothed, with the ability to be rapidly unfolded to impale their prey (DBW, 1998). |
