Abstract

Summary
BPH means a non-cancerous and non-inflammatory enlargement of
the prostate gland. TURP is considered the golden treatment BPH. TURP
like other surgeries has some postoperative complications such as
hemorrhage, CABD, urinary tract infections, urinary catheter obstruction,
and bladder neck contracture. TURP requires hospitalization for three to
four days. During this duration, nurses play a crucial role in preventing
potential postoperative complications by providing intensive
perioperative counseling and education. Providing the patient the proper
instructions about self-care, activities, exercises, nutrition and hygienic
care is a very important nursing practice before discharge.
The study aimed to evaluate the effect of preoperative nursing
instructions on postoperative complications of TURP. A quasiexperimental research design (study-control) was utilized to conduct the
study. The study was conducted in setting in Assiut Urology and
Nephrology Hospital, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt during the period
from Novemper 2019 to October 2020. A total number of 80 patients
with BPH undergoing TURP with age ranged from 40-65 years old were
allocated consecutively into the two groups (study or control group).
Three tools were used in conduction of this study. Tool I was the patient
assessment sheet, Tool II was the interview questionnaire for
measurement of patient’s knowledge about TURP, and Tool III was
illustrated nursing instruction brochure.
Summary
49
Main finding of the present study were:
- The majority of the patients in both study and control groups (95% and
92.5% respectively) was between 50-65years old. More than two-thirds
of patients in both groups were married (67.5% and 82.5% respectively).
Regarding the level of education, more than half of the study and control
group patients had read and write education level (55%% and 60%
respectively). There was no statistically significant difference between
both groups regarding their demographic characteristics.
- The main preoperative symptoms of BPH ere terminal dribbling and
inability to empty the bladder among study group (75% and 67.5%,
respectively) and control group (72.5% and 70% respectively).
- There was no statistically significant difference between the study and
control group regarding their knowledge score level about TURP before
application of the nursing instructions
- There was a significant difference between pre and post-test among the
study group regarding their knowledge level.
-There was a negative correlation between postoperative complications
and post test total knowledge scors among study group which means
when patient’s knowledge increases, it may have an effect in reducing
the postoperatieve complications of TURP
