Abstract

Background: Cigarette smoking is strongly associated with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. For several decades it was assumed that the relationship could be explained by reverse causation; that smoking was secondary to the illness itself, either through self-medication or a process of institutionalization, or was entirely explained by confounding by cannabis use or social factors,
Aim and Objectives: the aim of the study was to compare the severity of psychotic symptoms in both groups of patients with psychotic disorders and was to investigate the relation between the intensity of nicotine dependence and the severity of psychotic symptoms in patients with psychotic disorders who are nicotine dependent.
Subjects and methods: It is a case control analytical study conducted by convenient sampling at Al Khanka Mental Hospital, Egypt. The sample comprises of 52 male only patients diagnosed with psychosis according to the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria (via SCID-I) who were admitted at Al Khanka Mental Hospital before July 2019 for Six months from July 2020 to December 2020.
Results: There is high statistically significant difference between cases and controls as regards and B5, significant difference between cases and controls as regards B2, B3, B4, B6, B7, B8. The cases are higher than the control group according to B9 ―measuring other perception disorder‖ So, there is high significant difference between cases and controls as regards B9 and total score. There was strong positive correlation between frequency of smoking with presence of positive and negative symptoms and number of symptoms listed by DSM-IV in cases group with significance,
Conclusion: Our findings highlight the differences in our studied cases smoking behavior compared to non-smokers. The frequency and duration of smoking was associated with the severity of the disease or any particular symptoms.
