Abstract Abstract : Figures of speech perform a major role in the process of communication as they contribute successfully to form metaphorical expressions in English and Arabic. This study contrast translating metaphorical expressions in both English and Arabic. The study investigates the difficulties encountered by the third year students of English, at the faculty when they translate a test of metaphorical expressions from Arabic into English and vice versa. The researcher has used an applicable instrument, which is used to be distributed to 37 students. The test consists of two parts: part one has 20 Arabic metaphorical expressions, while the second part includes 20 English metaphorical expressions. This study is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is a general introduction. It includes the statement of the problem, the objectives of the study, its significance, the research questions, the hypothesis and its organization. As for the second chapter, it offers diverse definitions of figures of speech, their importance and translation. Moreover, it provides the relevant previous studies to the topic of this study. The third chapter is allocated to data collection. And describes the instrument used to collect the data, the piloting research tool, its validity and reliability. Regarding the four chapter, it analyzes the students’ translations of the expressions which have figures of speech and interprets the students’ answers the test. In addition, it clarifies the main errors the students have commit when translating the metaphorical expressions from Arabic into English and vice versa. Finally, the fifth chapter summarizes the main findings with many recommendations and suggestions for further studies. The recommendations present several techniques that can contribute to decreasing the students’ errors in translation and provide appropriate solutions for the students to avoid such errors in the upcoming future. |
