Abstract Diagnosis of hearing impairment in children brings a series of stressful consequences to families specifically mothers. Thus, they are prone to multiple obstacles related to child’s discipline, communication, medical treatment and follow-up, financial strains besides psychological, social and physical obstacles. Mothers can use different coping strategies interchangeable in order to overcome these obstacles. There are two main coping strategies that include problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. Pediatric nurses should be aware of challenges perceived by mothers in order to minimize their suffering and help them to cope positively according to different circumstances. The aim of the present study was to identify obstacles and coping strategies of mothers having children with hearing impairment. The current study was conducted in the Egyptian Association for Protection of Children in Damanhour. A convenient sample of 150 mothers having children with hearing impairment comprised the study subjects. The age of their children ranged from 2 to 6 years and free from other chronic illness such as mental retardation, diabetes and other sensory or motor impairments. Two tools were used to collect the necessary data. The first tool was Sociodemographic charactrstics and Medical Data of Mothers and their Children as well as Obstacles Facing Mothers of Children with Hearing Impairment Structured Interview Schedule which was developed by the researcher. It consisted of two parts; Part 1 included characteristics of mothers and their children. Part 2 contained obstacles that are faced by mothers. The second tool was Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE) Inventory which was developed by Carver (2013). It was translated into Arabic language by the researcher. It was composed of 28 items pertaining to 14 subscales. Tools were tested for their content validity by five experts in the field of Pediatric Nursing. Pilot study was carried out by the researcher on 15 mothers. Every mother was interviewed individually in the waiting room during working hours of the center. The data was collected over 4 months starting from the beginning of March to the end of June 2020. The main results of the current study revealed the following: Two-thirds of mothers (66.0%) were in the age group from 20 to less than 30 years with a mean age of 28.42 ± 6.76 years. The majority of mothers (83.3%) were married and 46.0% of them were having a positive parental consanguinity. Thirty-two percent of children had moderately severe impairment and using hearing . |
